Remembering photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt who died on this day, the 23rd August, in 1995 at the age of 96.
During his career Eisenstaedt captured many iconic images of notable ‘celebrities’ such as Monroe, Einstein, and Churchill.
However, his most famous image remains his August 14, 1945 photograph taken during the spontaneous celebrations that took place in New York’s Time Square when news of the end of WW2 was announced.
Even today controversy remains regarding the circumstances of the photo, the identity of the participants, and the ethics of the action depicted – with multiple individuals having claimed to be one or other of the individuals pictured (The main current theory is that the sailor was called George Mendonsa and the girl was a dental assistant named Greta Zimmer)
But maybe the long term anonymity of the image remains one of it’s strengths?

في ذكرى المصور ألفريد أيزنشتات الذي وافته المنية في مثل هذا اليوم، 23 أغسطس 1995، عن عمر ناهز 96 عامًا.
خلال مسيرته المهنية، التقط أيزنشتات العديد من الصور الأيقونية لشخصيات بارزة مثل مارلين مونرو، وآينشتاين، وتشرشل.
لكن تبقى أشهر صوره تلك التي التقطها في 14 أغسطس 1945 خلال الاحتفالات العفوية التي عمت ميدان تايمز سكوير في نيويورك عند إعلان نبأ نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية.
ولا يزال الجدل قائمًا حتى اليوم حول ظروف التقاط الصورة، وهوية الأشخاص الظاهرين فيها، وأخلاقيات الفعل المصوّر، حيث ادعى العديد من الأشخاص أنهم أحد الأشخاص الظاهرين فيها (النظرية السائدة حاليًا هي أن البحار يُدعى جورج ميندونسا، والفتاة مساعدة طبيب أسنان تُدعى غريتا زيمر).
ولكن ربما تبقى سرية هوية الشخص الظاهر في الصورة على مر الزمن إحدى نقاط قوتها؟
أحد سعيد للجميع! وأينما كنتم اليوم، لا تنسوا اصطحاب كاميراتكم، فكما أثبت آيزنشتات، فإن أفضل فرص التصوير لا تتطلب مواعيد مسبقة 👍
