Nikon F (1964–1965)
One of the cameras that forever changed professional photography.

The Nikon F was not only Nikon’s first SLR: it marked the birth of an entire system. A mechanical, modular, rugged camera designed to work; the kind of tool that ended up in the hands of photojournalists, correspondents, travelers, and photographers who needed a camera capable of withstanding almost anything.

My unit, dated by serial number to between late 1964 and early 1965, retains that very special presence of the early great Japanese professional SLRs. Paired with its Nikkor-S Auto 50mm f/1.4, it represents one of those moments when Nikon made it clear that it was no longer here to follow anyone, but to lead the way.

A serious, beautiful, and absolutely iconic camera.
