Syrian Wild Lens. 🌿📸—🐿️ Behind the Lens: 3 Hours of Silence to Document the “Hidden” Dweller of the Oak ForestsEvery wildlife shot has a story… and today’s story was woven by threads of patience in the heart of pristine oak forests in the enchanting village of Al-Helouneh, specifically near the Maqam of Sheikh Jameh. The goal? A living visual document of one of the most beautiful and cautious inhabitants of our forests: the Syrian Squirrel (Caucasian Squirrel).—📸 The Photography Trap… How Was Caution Deceived?Wildlife requires intelligence in dealing; squirrels possess a very high security sense that makes approaching them nearly impossible. So, I relied on setting up a “Smart Camera Trap”:🔸 The Feast: I placed some walnuts (highly favored by him) on a small rock adjacent to the trunk of an ancient oak tree.🔸 Digital Camouflage: I fixed my phone at a very close distance not exceeding 1.5 meters from the rock, and activated the “Motion Detection” feature so the trap works as a self-timer camera without direct human intervention that would frighten him.🔸 The Price of Patience: I retreated and secluded myself in my spot for three continuous hours of complete silence and stillness in the heart of the forest, leaving the camera to await the right moment.—✨ The Result: 3 Shots Telling the Story in Sequence:🔸 The First Shot: The moment of cautious descent, a stunning dynamic shot of his superior skill as he descends vertically headfirst down the oak trunk, using his strong claws to reach the reward.🔸 The Second Shot: The moment of exploration and reassurance, the squirrel sits firmly near the walnuts on the rock, his eyes scanning the place with instinctive caution.🔸 The Third Shot: An ultra-high-resolution close-up showing the beautiful details of his face and sensory whiskers, as he picks up a large walnut and holds it with both hands, as if announcing his mission’s success!—🧬 Identification Card: The Syrian SquirrelThis beautiful creature documented by the lens is the Syrian Squirrel (known globally as the Caucasian or Persian Squirrel), with the scientific name Sciurus anomalus.🔸 The Only Species: It is the only species of natural tree squirrels native to Syria and the Levant.🔸 Biological Indicator: Its presence in Al-Helouneh’s forest is considered a sensitive and excellent indicator of the health and integrity of the forest ecosystem there.—⚖️ Appearance and Physical Characteristics🔸 Size and Weight: A medium-sized and very agile creature; body length with head ranges from 20 to 25.5 cm, weighing about 335 to 430 grams.🔸 Functional Tail: It has a thick, distinctive tail nearly 20 cm long. Its beauty is not only in its shape, but it is an essential means for maintaining balance during vertical jumping, and works as a thermal regulator for its body.🔸 Camouflage Color: Its fur ranges from light chestnut brown and gray on the back to pale rusty orange or red on the belly, giving it ideal camouflage among oak tree trunks.—🌳 Behavior and Diet (The Hidden Guardian of the Oak)🔸 Forest Engineer: Locally called “Guardian of the Oak” or “Farmer of the Forest.” It has an instinctive behavior based on storing and sowing seeds (like walnuts, hazelnuts, and acorns) underground or in rock crevices to eat in winter. Since it forgets where some of those seeds are, they sprout and turn into new trees, actively contributing to the regeneration of Syria’s natural forests.🔸 Activity: A diurnal animal (active during daylight hours), arboreal par excellence, and possesses very strong claws enabling it to descend vertically headfirst as shown in the second photo.—⚠️ Challenges and Conservation StatusAlthough globally classified as “Least Concern,” it locally faces in the Levant the risk of habitat decline due to population expansion, fires, and poaching for sale as a pet. Therefore, our documentation of it at Syrian Wild Lens represents a very important visual awareness message to protect this Syrian wildlife treasure.—📸 Through the lens of Syrian Wild Lens❓ Have you seen the Syrian Squirrel before?
